Fragments of Structure is an original large contemporary abstract diptych by Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026. Composed of two 120 × 90 cm acrylic paintings on canvas, the work explores the meeting point between architectural structure and the beauty of imperfect, layered surfaces.

When I began this diptych, I was thinking about how a few fragments can suggest something much larger. A vertical line, an intersection, the remains of a surface, or the edge of an imagined structure can be enough for the mind to complete what is no longer visible.

I worked on both canvases simultaneously, allowing them to develop as one composition. Strong vertical and horizontal forms establish a geometric framework, while irregular edges, scraped passages, and spontaneous marks gradually interrupt that order. The two panels communicate with each other without becoming symmetrical, giving the diptych a natural visual rhythm.

The restrained palette combines warm beige, sand, ivory, cream, taupe, greige, soft white, stone grey, cool grey, charcoal, espresso brown, black, and subtle blue-grey accents. The contrast between warm earth tones and cooler greys creates depth while preserving the calm, sophisticated character of the work.

The paintings were created with professional acrylic paints using palette knives, brushes, layering, glazing, scraping, dry-brush techniques, dripping, and fine gestural lines. I repeatedly applied and partially removed paint so that earlier layers and marks remained visible beneath the surface. This process gives the canvases their weathered, tactile quality.

Thin expressive lines emerge from the stronger geometric intersections like fragments of an architectural drawing or an unfinished plan. For me, these delicate marks are important because they introduce movement and spontaneity into the more structured composition.

Moving between geometric abstraction, architectural abstraction, and contemporary textured painting, is intentionally open to interpretation. It may evoke weathered walls, fragments of architecture, abstract landscapes, or simply the traces that remain when something structured begins to change.

For me, this diptych is ultimately about order and imperfection—how something incomplete can invite the imagination to construct an entire space around it.

Displayed together, the two panels create an impressive composition approximately 180 × 120 cm, excluding the chosen gap between them.
