Description
Within a single soul, many voices seek their place.
In A Divided Soul Balance, Indonesian artist Kang Samar explores the courage required to live with complexity. Expressive profiles emerge throughout a vertical composition of turquoise, blue, green and yellow, punctuated by red faces and dark contours. Their exchanged directions and overlapping forms give the painting a restless, theatrical rhythm.
The work belongs to Samar's Wayang Kulit series, drawing inspiration from Indonesian shadow puppetry. Its distinctive characters become a language for examining human choices: the pull between duty and desire, the relationship between light and shadow, and the continuing search for a centre.
Intricate headdresses and decorative passages invite close observation. From a distance, the composition reads as an energetic ensemble; nearer, individual faces reveal distinct expressions, creating a more personal encounter with the painting.
For Samar, balance involves the strength to recognise different sides of oneself and continue forward. His handwritten words on the reverse express this return toward wholeness:
“Two sides, one soul balance — is the way home."
Born in Surabaya, East Java, in 1976, Kang Samar brings more than fifteen years of creative craft experience to his practice. His background in murals, decorative sculpture, relief and batik informs his attention to ornament and the emotional possibilities of colour.

Presentation
Kang Samar is an Indonesian painter born in 1976 in Surabaya, East Java. Inspired by wayang kulit, the traditional shadow theatre, he creates colourful paintings in which characters become expressions of love, courage, loyalty and inner conflict.
His figures inhabit intricate compositions filled with flowing lines, expressive faces and ornamental details. Brilliant yellows meet deep greens and luminous blues, while red accents bring intensity to the unfolding scene. The eye moves from one character to another, discovering relationships within a surface rich in movement.
At the heart of his practice is the belief that traditional stories can illuminate contemporary experience. His paintings explore the choices we make, the bonds we preserve and the tension between what we inherit and what we become. Works such as Destiny Matrix and Kindred Spirit invite viewers to find their own emotional connections within these symbolic encounters.
Samar brings more than fifteen years of experience in creative arts and craftsmanship to his painting. His activities have included murals in Central Java, garden reliefs and sculptures, batik production in Bali, and clothing design and screen printing. This varied background gives his work a sustained attention to handmade detail and the rhythm of patterned surfaces.
Presented by Abstract Art Gallery, Riga, Kang Samar offers a personal interpretation of Indonesian theatrical imagery, creating paintings that reward both immediate visual discovery and closer contemplation.
