Description
GENUINE DEDICATION & LOYALTY — KANG SAMAR
Dedication gives feeling a direction. Loyalty carries it forward through action.
In Genuine Dedication & Loyalty, Kang Samar brings these complementary qualities into an expressive composition inspired by Indonesian wayang kulit, the traditional shadow theatre.
Created in 2026, this unique square painting combines vivid acrylic colour with stylised figurative storytelling. A yellow-gold figure commands the scene, surrounded by curling ornaments and flowing passages of orange, green and red. Its animated features and open mouth establish a theatrical intensity, while a red face appearing at the lower left introduces another presence within the intertwined composition.
Dark patterned details provide contrast and rhythm, anchoring the luminous colours. Figures and surrounding motifs seem to flow into one another, encouraging the eye to move between expression, gesture and ornament.
The artist's accompanying statement distinguishes dedication as what we give from loyalty as what we keep. One concerns feeling; the other concerns the acts that sustain it.
On the reverse, a handwritten inscription develops this idea:
“Devotion is feeling, loyalty is the deed. Together they make the soul whole."
The painting becomes a reflection on commitment: how an emotion can grow into a lasting responsibility, and how loyalty gives continuity to what matters.
ABOUT THE ARTIST

Presentation
Kang Samar is an Indonesian painter born in 1976 in Surabaya, East Java. Inspired by wayang kulit, the traditional shadow theatre, he creates colourful paintings in which characters become expressions of love, courage, loyalty and inner conflict.
His figures inhabit intricate compositions filled with flowing lines, expressive faces and ornamental details. Brilliant yellows meet deep greens and luminous blues, while red accents bring intensity to the unfolding scene. The eye moves from one character to another, discovering relationships within a surface rich in movement.
At the heart of his practice is the belief that traditional stories can illuminate contemporary experience. His paintings explore the choices we make, the bonds we preserve and the tension between what we inherit and what we become. Works such as Destiny Matrix and Kindred Spirit invite viewers to find their own emotional connections within these symbolic encounters.
Samar brings more than fifteen years of experience in creative arts and craftsmanship to his painting. His activities have included murals in Central Java, garden reliefs and sculptures, batik production in Bali, and clothing design and screen printing. This varied background gives his work a sustained attention to handmade detail and the rhythm of patterned surfaces.
Presented by Abstract Art Gallery, Riga, Kang Samar offers a personal interpretation of Indonesian theatrical imagery, creating paintings that reward both immediate visual discovery and closer contemplation.
