Description
Love That Endures — Kang Samar
An exchanged gaze. Two figures drawn together. A circle of light suspended above them.
In Love That Endures, Indonesian artist Kang Samar transforms the expressive language of Wayang Kulit into a vivid contemporary painting about devotion, connection and the decision to remain together through change.
The square composition centres on two ornate figures whose golden-yellow faces stand out against flowing blues and greens. Curving gestures, intricate headdresses and richly coloured passages create a visual rhythm that moves between the characters, making their relationship the emotional heart of the work.
Samar draws inspiration from Indonesian shadow puppetry, translating its distinctive profiles and storytelling traditions into expressive acrylic brushwork. The result holds both theatrical presence and intimacy: a meeting that feels immediate, yet leaves room for the viewer's own memories and associations.
On the reverse, the artist has handwritten the message:
“It is not love that never changes. It is love that chooses to stay."
This inscription gives the painting a personal dimension, connecting its imagery with a reflection on lasting affection. Its luminous palette and detailed surface reward both distant viewing and close attention, bringing colour, warmth and a distinctive narrative presence to a collection.

Presentation
Kang Samar is an Indonesian painter born in 1976 in Surabaya, East Java. Inspired by wayang kulit, the traditional shadow theatre, he creates colourful paintings in which characters become expressions of love, courage, loyalty and inner conflict.
His figures inhabit intricate compositions filled with flowing lines, expressive faces and ornamental details. Brilliant yellows meet deep greens and luminous blues, while red accents bring intensity to the unfolding scene. The eye moves from one character to another, discovering relationships within a surface rich in movement.
At the heart of his practice is the belief that traditional stories can illuminate contemporary experience. His paintings explore the choices we make, the bonds we preserve and the tension between what we inherit and what we become. Works such as Destiny Matrix and Kindred Spirit invite viewers to find their own emotional connections within these symbolic encounters.
Samar brings more than fifteen years of experience in creative arts and craftsmanship to his painting. His activities have included murals in Central Java, garden reliefs and sculptures, batik production in Bali, and clothing design and screen printing. This varied background gives his work a sustained attention to handmade detail and the rhythm of patterned surfaces.
Presented by Abstract Art Gallery, Riga, Kang Samar offers a personal interpretation of Indonesian theatrical imagery, creating paintings that reward both immediate visual discovery and closer contemplation.
