DESCRIPTION
Strength becomes tenderness when guided by honour.
The Harmony of Knightly Love is an original acrylic painting by Indonesian artist Kang Samar, created in 2026 within his Wayang Kulit series.
Intricate figures, expressive profiles and curling ornaments fill the vertical canvas. Yellow and gold-coloured gestures introduce light and movement among darker passages. Red, pink, white and grey create a layered dialogue between intensity and softness.
Drawing on the visual language of Indonesian shadow puppetry, Samar considers love as a commitment expressed through character. Honour, loyalty and courage form the emotional foundation of the work.
Its intricate surface invites the eye to follow individual contours before returning to the composition as a whole. This interaction between detail and unity reflects the artist's central idea: harmony emerges when feeling and virtue move together.
The handwritten message on the reverse states:
“Knightly love bows not to desire, but to honor and finds harmony in staying true."
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kang Samar is an Indonesian artist born in Surabaya in 1976. His creative background encompasses painting, murals, sculpture, relief, batik and applied design.
Through his Wayang Kulit series, he draws on the imagery of Indonesian shadow puppetry to explore the inner life. His paintings address love, loyalty, conscience, truth and destiny through expressive colour and elaborate ornamental structures.
The Harmony of Knightly Love brings these concerns into a composition where visual energy accompanies a reflection on integrity and emotional commitment.

Presentation
Kang Samar is an Indonesian painter born in 1976 in Surabaya, East Java. Inspired by wayang kulit, the traditional shadow theatre, he creates colourful paintings in which characters become expressions of love, courage, loyalty and inner conflict.
His figures inhabit intricate compositions filled with flowing lines, expressive faces and ornamental details. Brilliant yellows meet deep greens and luminous blues, while red accents bring intensity to the unfolding scene. The eye moves from one character to another, discovering relationships within a surface rich in movement.
At the heart of his practice is the belief that traditional stories can illuminate contemporary experience. His paintings explore the choices we make, the bonds we preserve and the tension between what we inherit and what we become. Works such as Destiny Matrix and Kindred Spirit invite viewers to find their own emotional connections within these symbolic encounters.
Samar brings more than fifteen years of experience in creative arts and craftsmanship to his painting. His activities have included murals in Central Java, garden reliefs and sculptures, batik production in Bali, and clothing design and screen printing. This varied background gives his work a sustained attention to handmade detail and the rhythm of patterned surfaces.
Presented by Abstract Art Gallery, Riga, Kang Samar offers a personal interpretation of Indonesian theatrical imagery, creating paintings that reward both immediate visual discovery and closer contemplation.
