Description
The painting is executed in a soft pastel range: delicate pinkish grays, creams and pearly tones create the effect of mist or morning light. The artist works in textured strokes: the paint is laid on thickly, in relief, which makes the architecture look almost shimmering.
In the foreground are old buildings with arched windows and turrets. They are partly veiled in mist, as if dissolving into the air. Between them a river can be seen, with a small boat sailing on it. Above the water are several birds in flight, which adds calm and gentle movement to the scene.
The central part of the composition is accented by a majestic architectural structure with two towers and a tall spire. It dominates the city but is depicted very softly, as if through a haze: its contours are only suggested, not sharp.
The overall impression of the work is one of intimacy, quiet and the romantic atmosphere of an old city that appears before the viewer like a memory or a dream. The artist conveys not so much the real appearance as the mood, the flow of light and the dreaminess of the landscape.
