Description
This is a soft, atmospheric painting executed in pastel, muted tones that create the sense of a light mist over the city. The canvas depicts a Venetian canal surrounded by old buildings in warm cream, pink and ocher shades. The texture of the strokes is expressive and relief-like: the paint is applied thickly, in an Impressionist way, so that the light seems to shimmer on the surface of the walls and the water.
At the center of the composition is a light, almost white building with domes and a decorative pediment, which dominates the scene. To the left and right stand houses with windows of different colors, and boats are moored along the canals. Birds float on the water, adding liveliness to the painting.
On the right a gondola with a gondolier and a passenger can be seen. The water is calm, reflecting the muted architecture and the subtle play of light.
The overall impression is one of calm, tenderness and gentle nostalgia. The painting conveys the quiet beauty of an old city filled with light, air and soft colors.
