This sculpture, inspired by Neil Gaiman's quote, “A book is a dream you hold in your hand," is a poetic reflection on the power of books and literature. Gaiman, an author known for his creativity and ability to blend the fantastic with the everyday, expresses in this phrase the idea that books are not only physical objects, but also carriers of worlds and realities that, when read, become vivid and subjective experiences for each reader.
A book can be considered a “dream" because, like a dream, it invites the reader to immerse themselves in a different world, to disconnect from everyday reality and travel to other places, times, or dimensions. Dreams are personal experiences, often surreal and, in many cases, not always clearly logical. Similarly, when we read, we enter a universe that is not limited by the rules of reality: we can fly, travel through time, live in fantastic worlds, meet amazing creatures, or even know the deepest thoughts of the characters.
On the other hand, Gaiman says “you have it in your hand." Here the paradox stands out: although the book is something that may seem very concrete, very physical, like an object you hold, the experience it provides is intangible, ethereal. Just as a dream cannot be touched or possessed in the physical sense, the book offers a dream that we can “have," in the sense that it connects us to other realities and allows us to be part of them.
A dream is, in essence, a personal, unique, and subjective journey. The same is true of reading: two people can read the same book and have completely different experiences, as each projects their own thoughts, emotions, and experiences onto the work. The same book can mean something different depending on the moment in life, the circumstances, and the emotional state of the reader. In this sense, the book becomes a reflection of each reader's psyche, a dream created by the interaction between the work and the imagination of the person receiving it.
The phrase can also refer to the way a book is conceived by its author, as their “dream" that they share with the world, but once it is out of their hands, each reader will experience it in a unique way.
