Marlot – 11-04-23, Drawing, Pencil/Colored Pencil on Paper, 2023

Corné Akkers

A graphite drawing of a 'Marlot' park – 11-04-23 follows my previous one which depicts the Noteboompark in Voorburg. We stay in the region because Marlot is not far from where I also live. Just around the corner, so to speak. Therefore, I am often there. Especially during the Corona times when I walked through the Marlot Park, both the residential area and the forest. Well, in the Netherlands, when we talk about nature, everything is relative. Hardly a forest, just a really manicured park with a few canals and meadows running through it. I even sketched a small canal like this a few years ago. It is one of those characteristic parks of The Hague. Trees, a large meadow, and an old country house can be found in each of them. A Perfect Combination And Marlot has one: an old house dating from the seventeenth century. For no particular reason, I have not drawn this one before. Time to add to my list of completed park projects. A few others to do. Another reason was the other day, I was walking towards 'Huis Marlot'. Suddenly, I came across a beautiful view of the house under a flowering tree. There is a small pond between the building and the tree that made the landscape perfect for a drawing. For me, it is the perfect combination: a structure made by man, water (reflections) and vegetation. Overcoming Difficulties As always, every small artwork in progress presents difficulties to overcome. I found it relatively difficult to contrast the dark blue sky with the flowers. While the thick branches were quite dark, the flowers and small leaves were too lightly light. The hatching seemed to simply absorb them, creating a agitated appearance. So I had to soften the hatching a bit to get the desired contrast: smooth and loaded pencil lines. Overall, a beautiful impressionistic study to be made.
