Description
Preparatory trip This graphite pencil drawing 'Delft – 19-03-23' is based on a trip to this city just yesterday. You see, I was visiting this place with my parents in preparation for our visit to Amsterdam. On Sunday the 19th, I visited the Rijksmuseum for the major exhibition of Vermeer. The Prinsenhof was proposing a large exhibition on the times of Vermeer in Delft. After the museum visit, we walked in front of the Oude Kerk, also called 'Old John'. The weather was not particularly pleasant, but not as cold now. There was occasionally a reasonable amount of sun however. Suddenly, I saw a motif that attracted me. A dark side in the canal, some shadows around the bridge and some branches contrasting with the man-made church structures. Honoring Vermeer Since I have been liking to do landscapes lately, why wouldn't this landscape be the perfect follow-up to the previous one? For no particular reason, I have not done many drawings of Delft so far. However, I like this place and it is close to where I live. Mine was a surreal drawing from 2017. It is time to put that in order and make a second one. In addition to that, it is the Year of Vermeer. It is time to honor it. Soon the weather conditions will improve and the trees will be in foliage again. Delft will be so much more fun then. Four key elements When I think about it, I am always attracted by four key elements in a drawing. They are: the play of light and shadow, a landmark like a building, vegetation, and reflections of the water. Trees only, especially in foliage and dense, can be quite amorphous. Buildings only can seem a bit lifeless. Therefore, I like the interaction even between them. They give me repetition in variation and variation in repetition. The reflections in the water are a kind of bonus. Certainly, things reflected in the water can seem mysterious. In a way, the water serves as a bridge to other dimensions. Can you detect them in yourself? Graphite drawing (Sakura 0.5 mm, 4B) on Winsor & Newton Bristol paper (21 x 14.8 x 0.1 cm – A5 format) Artist: Cornelis Akkers :: Drawing :: Impressionist :: This piece is accompanied by an official certificate of authenticity signed by the artist :: To hang: No :: Signed: Yes :: Signature location: bottom right :: Paper: Portrait :: Original: Yes :: Framed: No
Presentation
Corné Akkers was born in 1969 in Nijmegen, Netherlands. He grew up in a Bohemian environment, during the 70's. This ideal creative atmosphere inspired him and gave him the desire to paint. He trained in painting and drawing.
In his paintings, the artist explores the nude and portrait with several types of analysis and treatments, and doesn't lose sight on how light plays an important role. He combines the figurative style and the quest for abstraction, he plays around with colors and creates vast optical illusions. Not only is his work unique, his paintings shout out cubism but also surrealism and fauvism. They are so hypnotic that they are able to capture the look.
While working as a painter, Akkers also teach art at Voorburg in Netherlands. His paintings have been exhibited several times and sold to art collectors, all around the world.
