Quiet morning in Provence, 2025

This contemporary landscape—an abstract expressionist painting with a touch of impressionism and Art Brut, depicting the South of France, Provence—was created by French artist Natalya Mougenot. Known for her emotionally charged and stylistically diverse works, Mougenot blends multiple movements—impressionism, expressionism, abstract art, and art brut—into a distinctive and recognizable visual language. Her bold, instinctive brushstrokes and raw, layered textures reflect her core artistic values: authenticity, sincerity, and emotional honesty.

Quiet morning in Provence is part of Mougenot's ongoing series inspired by her travels throughout France, and especially the Provençal region, where she frequently finds creative refuge. The sunlit seascapes, pine forests, blooming olive trees, and weathered orange-roofed houses of southern France deeply inform her work, serving as emotional and visual anchors.

In this painting, the foreground is ignited with fiery reds and oranges, representing a cluster of rustic houses rendered in abstract forms, alive with energy and movement. These vibrant structures are juxtaposed against the cool blues and greens of the Mediterranean Sea, creating a dynamic yet harmonious tension between warmth and calm. In the distance, earthy-toned mountains and a dramatic, swirling sky add depth and atmospheric emotion.

Created using mixed media—a combination of watercolor and acrylic paints—on heavyweight, professional-grade acid-free paper, the painting has been varnished for protection, enhancing its tactile quality and preserving its intensity. True to her process, Mougenot works without a preconceived plan, letting her emotions lead the way. Her canvas becomes a mirror of internal states, guided by spontaneity and the desire to evoke genuine feeling in the viewer.

Quiet morning in Provence is more than a landscape—it is a visceral encounter with place and memory, where the authenticity of the artist meets the timeless beauty of Provence in a vivid, immersive composition.
