Cliffside memory, 2025

This contemporary abstract expressionist landscape painting was created by French artist Natalya Mougenot, as part of her ongoing exploration of memory, emotion, and nature of inner experience.

In “Cliffside Memory," Mougenot fuses human presence with the natural world, creating a dialogue between body, earth, and sea, where memory becomes movement and color becomes energy.

Built through spontaneous and intuitive brushwork, the painting reflects the artist's belief that true creation arises from instinct rather than calculation. For Mougenot, intuition is not a technique — it is the essence of artistic truth. Her gestures are raw, immediate, and emotionally charged, allowing energy to flow freely from the subconscious to the canvas.

“Spontaneity is the pulse of my art. When I paint intuitively, I don't just transmit ideas — I transmit life." — Natalya Mougenot

Through vivid strokes of turquoise, ochre, orange, and soft grey, the composition evokes the tension between stillness and motion — the moment of standing on a cliff's edge, suspended between past and becoming, depth and air.

Influenced by abstract expressionism, fauvism, and art brut, Mougenot's style remains deeply personal — a balance of emotion and instinct, chaos and harmony. Each brushstroke vibrates with an inner rhythm, transforming the surface into a living field of energy.

“A canvas must reflect the inner core of the artist — otherwise, it's just surface. I seek the pulse beneath the paint."

“Cliffside Memory" stands out within her series for its emotional dynamism and meditative tension. It captures not just the memory of a place, but the sensation of being on the threshold of change — where silence and movement coexist.

“For me, energy is vital — it's what connects art to life. Without it, a painting cannot breathe."

This work is a poetic reflection on resilience and transformation, painted not to depict, but to feel. It is both a landscape and a heartbeat — an invitation to sense rather than to see.
