Description
“True Friend" by French artist Natalya Mougenot is a contemporary figurative painting of a single dog, celebrating loyalty, quiet presence, and the comfort of unconditional companionship.
Rendered with a playful yet introspective tone, the artwork depicts a dog wearing round blue glasses, seated calmly on a deep green armchair against a luminous blue background. The dog's steady gaze and relaxed posture convey attentiveness, trust, and emotional intelligence—qualities we instinctively associate with a true friend.
“A true friend doesn't need many words," Mougenot suggests. “Their presence alone is enough." Through this solitary figure, she captures the reassuring bond between humans and animals—one built on constancy rather than spectacle.
The glasses introduce an anthropomorphic, slightly humorous note, transforming a simple pet portrait into a reflection on wisdom, empathy, and mutual understanding. The composition invites the viewer into a space of emotional safety and familiarity.
Color plays a central role in Mougenot's practice. For her, bright, vivid hues are not decorative—they are a language of expression. Influenced by the philosophy of dopamine art, she uses saturated colors to evoke joy, vitality, and emotional uplift. She believes that colors transmit energy, and through bold blues, vibrant greens, and warm ochres, she intentionally infuses the canvas with her own positive energy.
“I don't just paint what I see," she explains. “I paint what I want to give." Each brushstroke becomes an act of transmission, carrying optimism, warmth, and life force toward the viewer.
Painted intuitively, her dynamic brushwork and open color fields merge organically without hierarchy, reinforcing themes of authenticity and emotional openness. Rooted in a metamodern sensibility, “True Friend" balances tenderness and irony, simplicity and depth.
With her signature expressive silhouettes and energetic palette, Natalya Mougenot creates artworks that resonate deeply with collectors seeking authenticity, emotional connection, and timeless contemporary appeal.

Presentation
Natalya is a contemporary french artist living in Lyon.
She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.
She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.
She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.
In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.
As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult.
Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.
She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details.
Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
