The Tender Collision, 2026

Yana Reznik

Some things from home follow you without being asked.
Not the furniture. Not the photographs. Something quieter — a pattern on a curtain, the way light passed through lace on an ordinary afternoon in a room that was entirely, safely yours. You didn't know then that you were memorizing it. You didn't know that one day you would need it.
This canvas carries a piece of that room. The floral tulle woven into the background of this painting — delicate, faded, luminous — was sent by the artist's mother. It once hung in her childhood bedroom. And now it lives here, pressed into the paint, holding two figures together the way only home can hold you: without condition, without explanation, simply there.
Two women lean into each other, foreheads touching, eyes closed. They are the same person at different hours of the same impossible day. One who learned to be hard enough to survive. One who refused to stop being soft. And here — in this collision so gentle it barely makes a sound — they finally rest against each other. No performance. No competition. Just the oldest, most necessary thing: the permission to need.
The spray paint erupts around them in every color that was ever too loud for the rooms they were expected to inhabit. Magenta. Electric blue. Acid green. All the feelings that had no respectable place to go — swirling, layered, gloriously uncontained. And beneath it all, the lace. Patient and quiet. Smelling, if you let yourself imagine it, faintly of somewhere you were once known completely.
This painting is about the moment your two selves stop negotiating and simply — hold each other.
It is about mothers who send pieces of home through the mail because they cannot send themselves.
It is about the tenderness that survives everything a toxic world throws at it, simply because it is too honest to die.
