Description
The artist explored this theme in several paintings. This is the final work in the series. It was exhibited at his solo exhibition in 2015 and published in the exhibition catalogue.
The composition invites multiple interpretations.
Some viewers may see a young mother and her grown daughter. Others may recognize two friends, neighbors, or rivals. Still others may perceive two aspects of a single person.
Perhaps it is a mature woman who still feels young.
Or a young woman with a mature soul.
The two women resemble one another, yet each possesses a distinct character.
The figure on the left is the more courageous of the two. She is ready to step beyond the familiar boundaries of life—beyond the limits of the painting itself.
Her companion, with a gentle gesture of the hand, seems to say that she is not yet ready.
There is a quiet sadness in this moment of parting, yet it feels almost like a blessing.
Between the two women appears a small pink shape resembling a broken heart.
There is an entrance.
There is an exit.
And there is always a choice.
