Description
A particularly intriguing compositional device in this painting is the painting within a painting.
At its center stands the image of a young girl dressed as an Infanta. She is Fortuna.
In her right hand she holds an hourglass.
In her left, a cornucopia—the Horn of Plenty.
On either side are scenes from human life. They are rendered less meticulously than the central figure, inviting the viewer into a dialogue with the painting.
What does Fortuna mean to me?
Is it a state of active engagement, of searching and discovery?
Or is it the quiet expectation of a miracle?
Or perhaps it is both.
