Where Daylight Meets Water is an original contemporary abstract seascape painting by Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026 as part of the Crossing Light series. Measuring 100 × 60 cm, this acrylic painting on canvas explores the moment when changing daylight transforms water, color, and the atmosphere of a landscape.
When I created this work, I was thinking about how quickly our perception of a place can change because of light. A stretch of water can appear deep and dramatic beneath clouds and, only moments later, become luminous as daylight reaches its surface. I wanted to capture that transition rather than depict a specific location.
The composition moves through layers of turquoise, azure blue, teal, blue-grey, and deep ocean blue, gradually opening into luminous areas of soft white, ivory, pale cream, misty grey, and warm beige. Dark passages of navy, charcoal, and blue-black create depth and suggest distant land or the meeting point between water and sky.
Near the center, a subtle passage of dusty mauve and muted magenta introduces an unexpected warmth within the predominantly blue palette, while delicate ochre-toned marks appear like brief traces of reflected light.
I developed the surface through multiple layers of professional acrylic paint, using palette knives, brushes, glazing, scraping, dry-brush techniques, dripping, and expressive gestural marks. Dense textured passages alternate with softer, more translucent areas, allowing earlier layers of color to remain visible.
Rather than painting a literal landscape, I use changes in texture, color, and tonal contrast to suggest water, distant shoreline, reflection, and an opening sky. The image remains intentionally ambiguous: it may recall a coastline after rain, a lake beneath changing clouds, or simply the sensation of looking toward a distant source of light.
For me, is about one of the central ideas of the Crossing Light series—the landscape itself may remain unchanged, yet light can completely transform the way we experience it.
This is a unique, one-of-a-kind original artwork, signed on the front and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. The painting is stretched on wooden stretcher bars and arrives ready to hang.
