Description
Within the portrait sequence of the exhibition's opening act——"Yuriko" occupies a pivotal, threshold position. While the name Yuriko traditionally evokes the lily ("child of the lily"), here the flower takes on a brooding, prophetic inflection: it marks the shift from Sakura's vernal awakening and Izumi's luminous stillness into a hypnotic, dormant trance before the encroaching tragedy.
Poetic Leitmotif
The artist's original haiku sets the atmospheric tone, weaving together motifs of slumber and ominous destiny:
Composition, Artistry, and Palette
Tondo Medallion and Geisha Iconography: The circular medallion (), bordered with delicate relief beading, rivets attention on the canonical yet intensely present figure of a geisha. Her classical high coiffure, secured with a hairpin, is adorned with floral ornaments in white and crimson, directly visualizing the blood lily of the verses.
Pictorial Modeling and Gaze: Yuriko's countenance is rendered with exquisite graphic subtlety: alabaster skin touched by a warm carmine blush, scarlet lips, and a piercing, static gaze. A faint ultramarine outline tracing her silhouette lifts the figure subtly from the ground, imparting a quiet luminescence and an ethereal aura.
The Kimono: Draped in deep midnight-blue silk patterned with floral sprays and framed by a vibrant red undercollar, the garment reinforces the disciplined grace and noble restraint of traditional Japanese dress.
Muted Collage Ground: In stark contrast to earlier works, the substrate beneath Yuriko's medallion retreats into smoky steel and dusk-gray tones. Barely discernible motifs— maple leaves, sakura petals, and textile weaves—seem veiled in twilight, heightening the impression of fading light and withdrawal into sleep.
Shadow-Box Frame: The deep wooden casing, washed in an intense turquoise blue, acts as an archival sanctuary, heightening the visual tension between the cool external shell and the warm crimson accents of the ornaments and collar.
Place Within the Conceptual Dramaturgy
In the overarching narrative of the exhibition, "Yuriko" concludes the quartet of pristine feminine archetypes () and operates as a direct bridge toward the unfolding drama:
Slumber as Precursor: Within the exhibition's metaphorical structure, Yuriko's sleep is not peaceful repose, but an aesthetic stasis—a symbolic blindness to the violence looming beyond the screen. The vivid crimson touches in her hair and collar explicitly foreshadow the tragedy of Act II in () and the bloodstained pavements of Hanazono.
The Suspended Ideal: She embodies the zenith of the "Façade": canonical perfection captured in absolute stillness at the very threshold where gossamer silk gives way to street violence and the irreversible seal of epoxy resin.
Presentation
Eugenio Montoro Aybar (born 1974 in Granada, Spain, where he currently resides and works) is a distinguished visual artist, researcher, and educator holding a PhD in Fine Arts from the University of Granada, specializing in pictorial techniques and artistic procedures. Throughout his established career, he has combined rigorous academic research and fine art painting with the direction of monumental mural projects and heritage conservation initiatives on both national and international stages.
Among his prominent monumental achievements is the direction and coordination of the mural and decorative paintings for the full-scale replica of the Alhambra of Granada at the Al-Yamamah Royal Palace in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), commissioned by King Fahd bin Abdulaziz. In Spain, he has led prestigious ecclesiastical restorations, including the monumental high altars of the Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel and the Basilica of Saint Andrew in Granada, as well as the mural decorations of the Basilica of Lillo in Toledo.
