Description
"Shinju" belongs to the first conceptual act of Eugenio Montoro Aybar's exhibition project: "The Façade, Encapsulated Beauty, and the Mask," exploring the vulnerability of traditional Eastern art and the construction of the idealized feminine archetype.
The core of the composition is formed by a circular medallion () featuring a meticulous portrait of a geisha whose name, , evokes the purity of the pearl. Her porcelain complexion and serene features stand in sharp contrast to the vivid crimson of her lips and the intricacy of her traditional updo adorned with floral ornaments. She wears a scarlet kimono accented with elaborate gold and botanical motifs, set against an understated silver ground. The perimeter of the tondo is bordered by a scalloped relief reminiscent of classical cameos or vintage postage stamps.
Serving as a poetic counterpoint, the artwork dialogues with the artist's original :
The background incorporates a delicate collage on paper and textile featuring classical Japanese motifs—flowering boughs, stylized clouds, and traditional kimono patterns. The surface is encapsulated beneath a dense layer of crystalline epoxy resin, a visual device that acts as a metaphor for beauty suspended and immutable across time, held captive behind a protective gloss. The piece is housed within a deep wooden shadow box finished in a vibrant petrol-blue hue that amplifies the warm nuances of the portrait.
Presentation
Eugenio Montoro Aybar (born 1974 in Granada, Spain, where he currently resides and works) is a distinguished visual artist, researcher, and educator holding a PhD in Fine Arts from the University of Granada, specializing in pictorial techniques and artistic procedures. Throughout his established career, he has combined rigorous academic research and fine art painting with the direction of monumental mural projects and heritage conservation initiatives on both national and international stages.
Among his prominent monumental achievements is the direction and coordination of the mural and decorative paintings for the full-scale replica of the Alhambra of Granada at the Al-Yamamah Royal Palace in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), commissioned by King Fahd bin Abdulaziz. In Spain, he has led prestigious ecclesiastical restorations, including the monumental high altars of the Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel and the Basilica of Saint Andrew in Granada, as well as the mural decorations of the Basilica of Lillo in Toledo.
