Description
"Ypsilon" is part of Mario Tarantino's award-winning "Archstract" series, a body of work that finds abstraction within the structures and geometry of the built world. Selected for Artsper's Pattern Play collection, the work sits at the intersection of black and white architectural photography and abstract art.
Photographed in Birmingham, UK, three buildings converge within the frame, their geometry forming a dramatic inverted Y that gives the work its title. At the centre, a skyscraper's diamond-patterned facade rises with commanding presence, its geometric repetition drawing the eye upward. The composition carries a deeper resonance, the converging forms and central tower evoking both masculine and feminine qualities in equal measure.
The photograph's monochromatic tonality, rich in contrast and atmospheric depth, deepens the shadows within the diamond pattern and intensifies the abstraction. The result is a bold visual statement.
This contemporary photograph is giclée printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, Mario's paper of choice. Its pictorial depth and nuanced tonal range, combined with archival pigment inks, ensure a museum quality fine art print of enduring quality.
Prior to leaving the studio, each artwork is reviewed, named, numbered and hand-signed by Mario. Part of an edition of 20, it is accompanied by a signed and stamped certificate of authenticity.
Presentation
Mario Tarantino's distinctive contemporary photography is expressed through his use of negative space, minimalist compositions, and striking contrasts. His relentless pursuit of the surreal allows him to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, creating captivating visuals that offer moments of aesthetic escapism. Working primarily in monochrome, his images are bold yet balanced, creating a visual language that has earned him numerous international awards, including multiple recognitions as Photographer of the Year.
Exhibited in cities such as Tokyo, Budapest, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Athens, his work has reached a global audience while also becoming part of both corporate and private collections worldwide. His artistic vision resonates strongly with photography collectors who seek not only technical excellence but the ability of an image to linger, to suggest, and to evoke.
His artistic perspective unfolds across three main genres—architecture, landscape, and street photography each approached in a purist manner, using minimal elements in seeking to capture the sublime through simplicity. Much of his work is created under low light conditions, where the soft illumination gives rise to evocative imagery with a futuristic atmosphere that has become his hallmark.
His fascination with the interplay of light and shadow, texture, tone, and form is reflected in every piece, revealing his profound love of aesthetic photography. Mario uses his camera as a painter does a brush, not only to capture an image but to convey an idea, an inner vision or share their unique sense of beauty.
