Description
The Kulturhaus of Berlin, a landmark of mid-century modern design, provides the subject for "Contour", a black and white architectural portrait by Mario Tarantino, selected for Artsper's Mid-Century Collection.
Mario's minimalist photographic composition focuses on a part of the edifice rather than the whole, the sweeping curves above set against the clean straight lines of the stairway below. Contrast and harmony held in precise balance. The white arc is the crescendo of the image, a contour line framing the opposing geometries and giving the work its name.
In this contemporary monochromatic photograph, light and shadow move across the different geometries, coaxing out their textures and giving the image its depth and character. The striking contrasts develop a futurist elegance which has become a hallmark of Mario Tarantino's work, where architecture and abstraction meet.
This award-winning architectural photograph is giclée printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, the paper that has become synonymous with Mario's print work, a 308gsm acid and lignin-free 100% cotton paper. Its smooth matte surface is perfectly suited to the sharp lines and crisp whites of the image, reproducing the fine details of the artwork with exceptional precision and clarity. Each print is created under the watchful eye of a master printer, ensuring a museum grade artwork of exceptional longevity.
Each artwork is meticulously inspected and bears Mario's signature alongside its name and number before leaving the studio. Part of a small edition of only 10, each is accompanied by a signed and stamped certificate of authenticity.
Presentation
Mario Tarantino's distinctive contemporary photography is expressed through his use of negative space, minimalist compositions, and striking contrasts. His relentless pursuit of the surreal allows him to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, creating captivating visuals that offer moments of aesthetic escapism. Working primarily in monochrome, his images are bold yet balanced, creating a visual language that has earned him numerous international awards, including multiple recognitions as Photographer of the Year.
Exhibited in cities such as Tokyo, Budapest, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Athens, his work has reached a global audience while also becoming part of both corporate and private collections worldwide. His artistic vision resonates strongly with photography collectors who seek not only technical excellence but the ability of an image to linger, to suggest, and to evoke.
His artistic perspective unfolds across three main genres—architecture, landscape, and street photography each approached in a purist manner, using minimal elements in seeking to capture the sublime through simplicity. Much of his work is created under low light conditions, where the soft illumination gives rise to evocative imagery with a futuristic atmosphere that has become his hallmark.
His fascination with the interplay of light and shadow, texture, tone, and form is reflected in every piece, revealing his profound love of aesthetic photography. Mario uses his camera as a painter does a brush, not only to capture an image but to convey an idea, an inner vision or share their unique sense of beauty.
