Description
Stark and minimal. Calming and meditative. A solitary path cuts through the volcanic ash dunes, an invitation to take the first step toward and beyond the distant horizon.
Mario Tarantino captured "Journey", a black and white landscape, on the island of La Palma, youngest of the Canarian Archipelago. In this harsh and seemingly inhospitable environment, life stirs, sparse vegetation taking root in the dark terrain, tentative yet resilient, nature patiently reclaiming what was once barren.
A boundless open sky gives the image its sense of calm and space, the contrast between shadow below and light above lending the work an atmospheric quality that is entirely Mario's own.
In black and white, this minimalist landscape takes on a surreal quality, the absence of colour amplifying the severity of the terrain. The fragile vegetation, the open sky, the solitary path, the image existing somewhere between the real and the imagined.
This fine art photograph is giclée printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, Mario's paper of choice, a 308gsm acid and lignin-free 100% cotton paper. Its smooth matte surface is perfectly suited to the bold contrasts and subtle textures of the image, reproducing the dark volcanic terrain, the emerging flora and the luminous sky with exceptional precision and sensitivity. First class materials and archival pigment inks ensure a museum grade artwork of exceptional longevity.
Mario casts a careful eye over each artwork before it leaves the studio, naming, numbering and hand-signing each one. Part of an edition of only 10, each is accompanied by a signed and stamped certificate of authenticity.
Presentation
Mario Tarantino's distinctive contemporary photography is expressed through his use of negative space, minimalist compositions, and striking contrasts. His relentless pursuit of the surreal allows him to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, creating captivating visuals that offer moments of aesthetic escapism. Working primarily in monochrome, his images are bold yet balanced, creating a visual language that has earned him numerous international awards, including multiple recognitions as Photographer of the Year.
Exhibited in cities such as Tokyo, Budapest, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Athens, his work has reached a global audience while also becoming part of both corporate and private collections worldwide. His artistic vision resonates strongly with photography collectors who seek not only technical excellence but the ability of an image to linger, to suggest, and to evoke.
His artistic perspective unfolds across three main genres—architecture, landscape, and street photography each approached in a purist manner, using minimal elements in seeking to capture the sublime through simplicity. Much of his work is created under low light conditions, where the soft illumination gives rise to evocative imagery with a futuristic atmosphere that has become his hallmark.
His fascination with the interplay of light and shadow, texture, tone, and form is reflected in every piece, revealing his profound love of aesthetic photography. Mario uses his camera as a painter does a brush, not only to capture an image but to convey an idea, an inner vision or share their unique sense of beauty.
