The artist does not call himself a sculptor, but a metal worker. His encounter with aluminum occurred in the 1980s, when he and his wife bought a small hardware manufacturing company. There he cultivated the know-how necessary for the handling of this capricious metal of which he likes so much the liquid material, the lightness, the soft color with the discreetly bluish shine and the conductivity which allows to feel the heat and the energy of the one who has it. touches ....

These works are very often variations around the motif of the "Hominium", a small figurine with a stiff posture and a polished face which reflects the image of the one who looks at him and of the world who sees him. surrounded. It plays on the contrast of materials, the raw and rough appearance of the body combined with the smooth. The artist stages his "Hominium", brings them together, conditions them. He creates loose or dense crowds, blocks, galleries of portraits. As he explains himself, "the crowd is often only a simple pretext. It can be little" we "that we assemble, our anxieties, our hatreds, our loves, our vices ... . who then make a whole. Behind the crowd, it is always the individual that we find. Because all the characters are made one by one. They are practically similar but never completely identical. It's like us, we each have our own identity. It is these little identities that make up the crowd. "

The artist thus questions our relationship to the world, our relationship to history. His staging, often close to the installation, tackles the themes of the absurd, anonymity, the multitude and loneliness. They reflect back to us the image of our own existence. A temporality frozen in metal and moving in its image. His mirror games are also role-playing games where everyone can find themselves or get lost.

New & remarkable Artists

Marcus Egli was born in 1957 in Zurich. He lives and works in Les Ponts-de-Martel in Switzerland.

Marcus Egli bought a hardware store with his wife in 1980, and it was then that he had contact with aluminum and he really liked the material, he liked it so much that it became his favorite material later on. In his business he worked with this capricious material for a long time in order to get satisfactory results, because he really liked the look.

Marcus's works revolves mostly around a character he calls the "Hominium" which is a hieratic statuette with a smooth face that reflects its environment. The artist likes to play on the contrast and on the material effects, his figures have a rough physical body and polished faces.

The artist likes to compose and arrange his "hominiums" combine them, manipulate them and update his small statuettes clusters.

In his sculptures, Marcus Egli questions the viewer about his worldview. His pieces, deal with different topics from the irrational, the mundane and abundance to isolation.
