Description
This is an Impressionist or Post-Impressionist painting executed in thick, impasto strokes. The painting most likely depicts a scene in Venice: in the foreground is a gondola with a gondolier steering the boat, and passengers seated in it. The background is filled with abstract architectural forms reminiscent of old Venetian palaces with arches and windows, which dissolve slightly into the surrounding space thanks to a soft, blurred palette of white, gray, pink and beige tones.
The textured surface creates a sense of moisture and of reflections on the water. In the distance another boat with small figures can be seen. The whole composition conveys the atmosphere of romance, calm and mystery characteristic of Venice.
