Something and nothing, 2012

Anatoly Kost

"Something and Nothing" is an exploration of presence and absence—of form emerging from and dissolving into space. In this striking composition, Anatoly Kost plays with structural elements that seem both constructed and deconstructed, reinforcing the philosophical tension between being and void. Dark, gestural brushstrokes carve through the canvas, intersecting with luminous patches of ochre, blue, and ivory, evoking a sense of shifting realities.

The work invites contemplation on the nature of perception—how the mind assigns meaning to abstract forms and how absence itself can become a presence. The fragmented yet rhythmic arrangement of shapes and lines suggests a fleeting moment between materiality and emptiness, much like a memory forming and fading.

Concept

Painted in 2012 in Anatoly Kost's Volyn workshop, Something and Nothing is part of the artist's ongoing investigation into abstraction as a philosophical medium. This work was featured in exhibitions highlighting the intersection of movement, structure, and existential inquiry in contemporary art.

As a leading figure in "contemp-abstraction," Kost uses his signature ArtHouse abstraction style to create works that transcend mere visual representation. His pieces function as meditative spaces where viewers can engage with the deeper interplay of contrasts—substance and void, motion and stillness, intuition and logic.

A profound addition to any modern art collection, Something and Nothing offers a compelling visual and conceptual dialogue, making it a must-have for collectors who appreciate the depth of contemporary abstraction.
