The Hypnoglyph, 2008
Gérard Klein, writer

The hypnoglyph is a mysterious, alluring and dangerous object. Placed on a table, it will irresistibly catch your eye, then your hand, which will touch it first, and caress it. Here you are trapped. Unable to detach yourself from it, you will fall into a sweet hypnosis, and will soon be the victim of a predator.

The word comes from the Greek and brings together glyph, sign, even form, as in hieroglyph, and hypnos, for sleep or abandonment of the conscious state. It was forged in the early 1950s by John Anthony, whose real name was John Ciardi, an American publisher and poet who translated The Divine Comedy into English. It’s the title of a memorable and repeatedly reissued short story.

The first time I saw, a little by chance as we make all the real discoveries, then touched as he invited, the sculptures of Jean-Christophe Couradin, I immediately thought of this story, read fifty years earlier . The hypnoglyph in this tale comes from another world, another planet where it serves as a tactile bait. Couradin's works hardly come any closer, at least the rare woods from which they were extracted, with exotic names and origins, lovewood from Guyana, cocobolo from Mexico, green gayak (a wood that does not float) splendidly. veined, almost mineral, pink ebony from South Africa, malgaro from Madagascar, rosewood from Rio, ebony from Makassar or Africa, or even from Indonesia, violet wood from Brazil, and some varieties of mahogany, including that of which has become rare in Cuba, which used to be used in photographic chambers because of its great stability. A real tour of our planet for lack of another.

The shapes also remind me of secret origins. They certainly remind me of a few Brancusi, and also of those objects with which Yves Tanguy populated his underwater paintings. Roger Caillois, who collected minerals for their ability to make him dream, would have liked them. But Couradin's work is not part of any identifiable tradition, at least by me, if not perhaps in nature. It suggests to me the scrolls of shells from warm and deep seas, looking like fruits or eggs from another world, sometimes mathematical functions unless they are other curves, in my view. openly feminine, sometimes pushed to the edge of the penis or the opening of a bivalve. Of course, the artist has neither such models, nor even such intentions. I project my images or even my fantasies onto these curves. It is, however, that they exude a powerful and serene sensuality, through their material, their colors, their polish so perfect that it would sometimes make them look like hard stones were it not for the warmth of wood.

Instead, as most sculptors (and especially museums) do not to touch these surfaces, Jean-Christophe Couradin strongly recommends it. Take his advice. Your eyes invite you.
Bring your hand up. Flatter the object with your fingers. From the palm of the palm. Finally stroke it.
You are seduced. You are trapped. You are lost.

A hypnoglyph, I warned you though.
