Description

What color can make this pastel drawing 'Berg en Dal' – 30-12-23' – is the second of the new editions of a pastel series in constant growth. The one I finished on December 19th exceeded my expectations. Frankly, I didn't think I could add anything to the reference drawing I made in May. Then, you can see what the color can do. After my Christmas drawing on December 25th, it was time to get back on track. Nothing else to do either. Outside, there is a nauseating gloom and I like to avoid fireworks at all costs. This way, I still have my eyes and hands for January 1st. Truly, it is a masquerade. People buy for more than 100 million euros here in the Netherlands. Foreigners are often surprised when they come to visit us. They say it looks like a war zone at noon. The poor Ukrainian refugees. These millions would have been better spent in Ukraine! Was the driving force not this: to create art and offer people a perspective on beauty? Of course, my chalk pastels are much cheaper than a normal portion of fireworks. Another advantage: my colors do not fade instantly. The flashes of color in the sky do. With this pastel, I also want to convey another idea. Beauty is not made of spectacular blows that tear your eardrums but in silence. Hence my latest creation which speaks for itself. A wandering beauty silently expressing captivating colors. End-of-year resolution that comes to mind: spend more time in nature. A blank spot The reference drawing I used for this one, I finished it on November 2nd. Although this one was impressionistic rather than cubist, I decided to go in another direction this time. Recently, I also feel the need to immerse myself in the process of abstracting landscapes in pastel and oil. A little emptiness in my work. I have always considered my pastels more suitable for creating impressionism than cubism. Maybe that has something to do with a specific aspect. The broken hatch marks create these impressionistic views better than other mediums. On the other hand, I always feel that I cheat a lot by making large areas with chalk. It is easy and I fear delivering a careless and hasty work. Cancel the fear for 2024 I would say and try anyway. This pastel of this beautiful landscape in Berg en Dal is a first attempt. Presentation

Corné Akkers was born in 1969 in Nijmegen, Netherlands. He grew up in a Bohemian environment, during the 70's. This ideal creative atmosphere inspired him and gave him the desire to paint. He trained in painting and drawing.

In his paintings, the artist explores the nude and portrait with several types of analysis and treatments, and doesn't lose sight on how light plays an important role. He combines the figurative style and the quest for abstraction, he plays around with colors and creates vast optical illusions. Not only is his work unique, his paintings shout out cubism but also surrealism and fauvism. They are so hypnotic that they are able to capture the look.

While working as a painter, Akkers also teach art at Voorburg in Netherlands. His paintings have been exhibited several times and sold to art collectors, all around the world.
