Description

A new model This graphite drawing 'Neo Deco' – 01-06-23 – serves as a break after my long series of landscapes and cities. The last representation of the Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague, I sold it yesterday. It is a beautiful conclusion and I think it is time to do something new or is that the case? Hmm, maybe not. A return to feminine forms is not really the case but the model certainly is. You do not know her yet. I have known her since Instagram where she asked me to represent her. Her slender forms impressed me and during my frenzy of landscapes, I looked at the reference photos she sent me. I chose this one because of the attractive folds of the cloth she is holding in front of her body. Straight approach When looking at some recent nudes I have done, I saw that it had been a while since I drew them in an angular way. I think a real angular version was Neo Deco – 26-01-23. For this pose of my usual model, I used strong backlighting, something that is completely missing here. In fact, the light in the photo comes from the front. Fortunately for me, the shadows in the folds and limbs were just as interesting. My choice for straight cubist contour outlines was right, I think. They perfectly represent the straightness of the folds and wrinkles. Because of her slender appearance, her body also seems to complement this straight approach. Neo Deco? There, a new one in the Neo Deco series. A kind of? Calling it cubism would just make me chased away by people who say it is not cubism at all. No Picasso multiperspectivism. Is it decorative by nature? Where the 'deco' link could be said. I think this style is a perfect combination of impressionism, realism, art deco, and cubism. If it is round, I call it roundism. I think the deco aspect is manifested in the repetitive series of diagonals in the folds of the cloth on her stomach. They contrast with the vertical position of her body. The extrapolations in the negative space are also typical of art deco, I think. I'll leave my case for now. SEO and the word N I sometimes feel a bit awkward but anyway all -isms are in their own way. In fact, I would prefer not to call anything. But well, I am an artist in difficulty and I have to develop clever and SEO-resistant texts to be found. In the past, I simply called them 'nude' plus a date to be able to distinguish them. However, this turned out to be an unsuccessful strategy. The social media sentinels often blocked me because of the 'N' word. Unfortunately, I have to conclude this artistic statement with this bitter conclusion. Facebook and Instagram forced me into this practice of alternative naming. I do not see any disadvantage to it. 'Neo Deco' is more specific than 'nude' and I like the sound. Alternatives? Corné Akkers

Presentation

Corné Akkers was born in 1969 in Nijmegen, Netherlands. He grew up in a Bohemian environment, during the 70's. This ideal creative atmosphere inspired him and gave him the desire to paint. He trained in painting and drawing.

In his paintings, the artist explores the nude and portrait with several types of analysis and treatments, and doesn't lose sight on how light plays an important role. He combines the figurative style and the quest for abstraction, he plays around with colors and creates vast optical illusions. Not only is his work unique, his paintings shout out cubism but also surrealism and fauvism. They are so hypnotic that they are able to capture the look.

While working as a painter, Akkers also teach art at Voorburg in Netherlands. His paintings have been exhibited several times and sold to art collectors, all around the world.
