Geesje Kwak – 12-07-21 A portrait of Geesje Kwak. One day, I experimented with Art Graf. I was quite surprised and therefore thought it would be nice to make a portrait of Geesje Kwak. There are only a few 15 strange photos of her taken by Breitner. Well, there could be more in the archives. There were only two that were not related to her kimono series and one of them was "in profile". Rather grainy and damaged but still usable, I suppose. I must say that I love these bun hairstyles because they come from different angles. This automatically opens a door to cubism, my favorite kingdom to linger in. New acquisitions At Brugman Art where I also teach, I bought a beautiful thick Kolinsky sable brush and a white Art Graf chalk to expand my range. I must say that I am starting to get the hang of it. I am starting to better understand the principles of watercolor. Furthermore, I have come to the conclusion that it is a perfect cross between drawing and watercolor techniques. Perhaps the latter applies more than the art of drawing itself. The next thing I will know will be to be hooked on watercolor. Who knows? Diagonals In painting and/or drawing – I am not sure how to describe it – I looked for diagonals. I found that the head was a bit square because of her hairstyle. The direction of her hair is purely diagonal however. Therefore, I also put triangular planes in her chin and around her mouth pointing diagonally upwards. The same goes for the eye orbit and the nostril. The scarf obviously follows the same direction and angle, ending in a powerful and imposing posture. Obviously, she can seem vulnerable and a little fierce at the same time. The first quality is conveyed by her gaze. The second is my work.
