“Hold memory" is an original contemporary figurative painting by French artist Natalya Mougenot, depicting a woman in her everyday life seated in her living room while speaking on an old telephone to someone dear to her heart. Painted in an expressive metamodern style with oil on cotton stretched canvas, the work measures 33 × 42 × 2 cm (13 × 16.5 × 0.8 inches).

This painting forms part of Mougenot's ongoing series dedicated to women, where ordinary moments become reflections on intimacy, memory, and emotional presence. In “Hold memory", the woman appears fully absorbed in a precious conversation, suspended in the quiet emotional space created by a familiar voice.

The vintage telephone carries a strong nostalgic symbolism, evoking waiting, tenderness, distance, and connection. Through this intimate domestic scene, Mougenot explores the emotional importance of simple human exchanges that remain deeply engraved in memory.

As Natalya explains, “I am interested in the moments people usually overlook — small conversations, pauses, gestures, silences. Sometimes these are the moments we remember most deeply."

The work is created in an expressive metamodern style — a contemporary approach that combines emotional sincerity with painterly freedom. For viewers unfamiliar with the term, metamodernism in art embraces authenticity, vulnerability, and human emotion while remaining visually modern and simplified. Rather than aiming for strict realism, Mougenot uses bold contours, visible brushstrokes, and luminous color harmonies to capture atmosphere and feeling.

Warm pinks, muted reds, soft greens, and creamy tones create an intimate and emotionally open composition. The simplified forms and spontaneous gestures give the painting both tenderness and contemporary energy, transforming an everyday moment into something universal and poetic.

Natalya describes her process this way: “I do not want to over-polish emotion. I want the painting to keep the freshness of the first feeling, because that is where sincerity lives."

“Hold memory" will appeal to collectors drawn to contemporary figurative art, expressive portraiture, and authentic visual storytelling centered on femininity, memory, and emotional connection.
