Return to celebrity This graphite pencil drawing 'Untitled – 27-07-023' is a return to celebrity once again. Veronica Lake was the last of the series. Lulus I consider a series and a world in itself. Of course, a star too. Audrey however, I have made only one, almost a decade ago. In fact, it is one of those drawings with which I began my new cubist revolution. Don't you think it was time for me to do another portrait of her? You know, my cubist style has evolved over the years. See what my roundism style can do this time. Forms and Ideas I have recently returned to this almost hazy vision of keeping things soft and airy. I think I have succeeded in doing (or keeping) this in my drawing of Veronica. I have surely described this feeling several times before. It is a quality that I have always honored in Cézanne. I summarize it concisely for those who have not read the previous art statement on the subject. Transparency and unfinished forms I consider this a kind of opening discussion with the viewers. They must complete it in their minds. My theory implies a more complete definition of what reality is, something more significant perhaps. Things with attached names are nothing more than forms. By completing them halfway, it will trigger more imagination because that is what reality fundamentally is. Airy and Open Consequently it is the birth of a kind of hyperrealism, far beyond the scope of photorealism. By showing less, there is more imagination and therefore more than what the eye sees. As for the representation itself, at the beginning I did not know what to do with the turtleneck she is wearing. I was afraid to hatch the outfit to total darkness and also to do that with the hair. It would only make the two bulbous structures appear. So I kept the forms open and rendered all the forms only partially dark. To allow her to communicate with the white negative space I kept the forms open. The result is that you have the feeling of traveling through her, finding entrances and exits through the entire paper. My Lady Personally I hope that the swirling and straight forms secretly say something essential about My Lady. By the way, did you know that she is actually half-Dutch? As a compatriot I am proud of that. I have watched some interviews with her and she speaks our language perfectly. Her accent seems however outdated. Just like people spoke in the 1950s or how our former queen Beatrix still speaks. Looking at her photos she still seems so young. As if these photos were taken yesterday. This proves that all things pass so quickly. Only paintings and drawings last a little longer, vestiges of bygone ages. So Audrey lives a little longer but now you viewers create her.
