“Between Times" is a contemporary figurative woman's portrait painting by French artist Natalya Mougenot, defined by a refined and atmospheric palette of deep ultramarine blue, muted cobalt, warm terracotta, soft peach skin tones, and cool accents of icy blue and white—echoing the expressive color sensibility of Henri Matisse while introducing a more subdued, introspective tonal harmony.

Executed in acrylic on heavyweight, professional acid-free paper, the work embodies key elements of contemporary figurative painting: expressive brushwork, gestural line, and a modern, minimalist approach to portraiture—highly aligned with current trends in collectible contemporary art and emerging figurative artists.

Matisse's legacy of simplified forms, fluid contour, and flattened space is reinterpreted here through a restrained yet emotionally charged composition. The dominant blue background—rich, immersive, and enveloping—creates a sense of timeless suspension, while the warm terracotta figure emerges with quiet intensity. Subtle contrasts between warm and cool tones—peach and cobalt, sienna and icy blue—generate depth without relying on traditional realism.

Part of Mougenot's ongoing series dedicated to women, the painting continues her exploration of femininity, introspection, and emotional presence. Positioned between figuration and abstraction, the work captures not a precise likeness, but a psychological state—an in-between moment of reflection, transition, and inner stillness.

The composition presents a reclining female figure, her body angled diagonally across the surface, enhancing the sense of movement within stillness. Her eyes are closed, her expression serene yet distant, as if suspended between wakefulness and dream. The elongated forms and simplified anatomy emphasize gesture over detail, reinforcing the emotional narrative.

Mougenot describes her enduring focus on women:
“Women remain my endless source of inspiration. Through their gestures, their silences, their strength and vulnerability, I explore not just appearance but emotional truth. Each woman carries stories in her posture, in her gaze, in the way she holds herself."

Her intuitive and spontaneous process is evident in the visible, layered brushstrokes and dynamic linear accents:
“I paint from feeling, not from planning. The brush leads me, the color dictates the form. It's a dialogue between my hand and the canvas—immediate, alive, unpredictable."

In “Between Times," the interplay of loose, sketch-like lines and more solid painted areas creates a tension between structure and fluidity—an essential characteristic of contemporary expressionist portraiture. The cool highlights tracing the contours of the body suggest both light and emotional resonance, as if the figure is gently dissolving into the surrounding space.

“I love mixing styles—Matisse's bold forms, expressionist energy, contemporary rawness. Why choose one when they all speak truth? My painting is a conversation between different voices of art history."

This synthesis situates Mougenot's work within a broader dialogue of modern and contemporary art, while maintaining a deeply personal and recognizable voice. The absence of detailed background or narrative elements directs the viewer's attention entirely to the figure's internal world.

“Between Times" stands as a contemplative and emotionally nuanced example of contemporary acrylic painting. Through its balanced composition, sophisticated color palette, and expressive restraint, it evokes a liminal space—between movement and stillness, presence and absence, thought and dream—inviting the viewer into a quiet, introspective encounter with time itself and the inner life of the feminine.

Presentation

Natalya is a contemporary  french artist living in Lyon.

She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.

She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.

She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.

In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism,  which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.

As an artist and as a woman  she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion,  is the pillar for the inner adult.

Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.

She works  rapidly  and is constantly sensitive  to the details.

Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
