Description
Gran Canaria, the island Mario Tarantino calls home, provides the setting for "Still", a serene black and white seascape. On its rugged northern coast, a lone figure stands at the water's edge as the sun descends over the Atlantic, its fading light further filtered by the "calima" (fine desert sand particles carried across from the Sahara and suspended in the atmosphere), bathing the entire scene in an ethereal glow. "Still" is both the title and the feeling.
The artist's use of a long exposure stills the water, transforming it into a state that exists only in the captured moment, ushering in a sense of the surreal. What the eye sees and what the camera captures become two entirely different things.
The minimalist composition, typical of the artist's style, and vast negative space portray the immensity of nature. Against this vastness, the solitary figure speaks to our relationship with the natural world and our insignificance within something far greater. A stillness that calms and humbles.
This award-winning contemporary photograph is giclée printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, Mario's paper of choice. Its pictorial depth and extended tonal range, combined with archival pigment inks, result in a museum quality fine art print of exceptional longevity.
Mario personally inspects each print before naming, numbering and hand-signing it. Part of an edition of 20, it is accompanied by a signed and stamped certificate of authenticity.
Presentation
Mario Tarantino's distinctive contemporary photography is expressed through his use of negative space, minimalist compositions, and striking contrasts. His relentless pursuit of the surreal allows him to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, creating captivating visuals that offer moments of aesthetic escapism. Working primarily in monochrome, his images are bold yet balanced, creating a visual language that has earned him numerous international awards, including multiple recognitions as Photographer of the Year.
Exhibited in cities such as Tokyo, Budapest, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Athens, his work has reached a global audience while also becoming part of both corporate and private collections worldwide. His artistic vision resonates strongly with photography collectors who seek not only technical excellence but the ability of an image to linger, to suggest, and to evoke.
His artistic perspective unfolds across three main genres—architecture, landscape, and street photography each approached in a purist manner, using minimal elements in seeking to capture the sublime through simplicity. Much of his work is created under low light conditions, where the soft illumination gives rise to evocative imagery with a futuristic atmosphere that has become his hallmark.
His fascination with the interplay of light and shadow, texture, tone, and form is reflected in every piece, revealing his profound love of aesthetic photography. Mario uses his camera as a painter does a brush, not only to capture an image but to convey an idea, an inner vision or share their unique sense of beauty.
