Holz

Der Bildträger Holz nimmt in der Geschichte der Malerei eine zentrale Rolle ein und erlebt heute eine bedeutende Wiederbelebung in der zeitgenössischen Kunst. Er bietet eine Oberfläche, die zugleich stabil, warm und lebendig ist und das Erscheinungsbild des Werks unmittelbar beeinflusst.

Seit der Antike verwendet und in den bemalten Tafeln der italienischen und flämischen Renaissance auf ihren Höhepunkt gebracht, nutzten Meister wie Jan van Eyck und Botticelli seine Stabilität und seine Fähigkeit, feine Lasurschichten aufzunehmen. Später wurde Holz zunehmend durch Leinwand ersetzt, bevor es in der zeitgenössischen Kunst eine starke Rückkehr erlebte.

Diese Wiederentdeckung ist Teil eines breiteren Interesses an der Materialität des Trägers als eigenständigem Bestandteil des Kunstwerks: Astlöcher, Maserungen und Unebenheiten des Holzes werden nicht mehr verborgen, sondern bewusst in die Komposition integriert und treten in einen reichen visuellen und haptischen Dialog mit der Malerei. Einige Künstler lassen die Holzmaserung durch transparente Farbschichten sichtbar werden, während andere mit dem Kontrast zwischen der Rauheit des Materials und der Fließfähigkeit großflächiger Farbaufträge arbeiten und Holz damit zu einem Material doppelter Natur machen – zugleich Träger und Ausdrucksmittel.
