The Body Remembers The history of painting is, in many ways, a history of the body. Across centuries, artists have turned to the human figure not merely as an object of representation, but as a means of understanding existence itself. In Memories and Bodies, Afolabi Idris enters this enduring conversation from a distinctly contemporary position, proposing the body not as anatomy but as memory made visible. His paintings operate within the fragile terrain between figuration and psychology. Faces become landscapes of lived experience; gestures become repositories of emotion; colour assumes the function of recollection rather than description. The figures are not portraits of identifiable individuals but embodiments of universal human conditions; grief, tenderness, resilience, longing, and transformation. Idris’ background as a doodle artist is more than biographical detail; it is fundamental to understanding his painterly language. Live drawing demanded immediacy, economy, and trust in intuition. Those qualities remain evident in his mature practice, where every brushstroke retains the vitality of a first mark while contributing to carefully orchestrated compositions. The paintings neither romanticise memory nor attempt to preserve it intact. Instead, they embrace its instability. Surfaces are built through successive layers, allowing traces of earlier decisions to remain visible, much as memory itself accumulates, obscures, and reveals over time. The acrylic medium becomes an analogue for remembrance capable of concealment and revelation simultaneously. What ultimately distinguishes Memories and Bodies is its refusal to offer certainty. The paintings ask viewers to complete them through their own experiences, recognising that every body carries invisible histories.
