Far off from its ethnic and tribal aspect, contemporary African art has conquered, little by little, a western audience in search of artistic discoveries coming from somewhat exotic destinations.
Its fascinating emergence is due to new art fairs, exhibitions, artistic practices but also new players in art promotion, often accountable for what is shown.
Indeed last year, the Cartier Foundation held a beautiful retrospective exhibition - Beauté Congo - on contemporary Congolese artists. The same year, Tate Modern hosted an exhibition on Ivorian artist Frédérick Bruly Bouabré. This year it was the Louis Vuitton Foundation’s turn with a major exhibition of the Pigozzi collection. Africa was also in the spotlight at the Art Paris Art Fair this past April.
From November 11 to 13, the contemporary art and design salon AKAA as in Also Known As Africa, focused on Africa, will take place at the Carreau du Temple in Paris. The 29 galleries will present works in all mediums, paintings, sculptures, artworks on textile, digital art, performances and photographs.
The year ahead will offer a wonderful trip to discover contemporary African artists, and so does this selection!
