The photograph of Breitner This graphite pencil sketch "Elongated nude after Breitner – 27-04-24" is based on a photograph that Breitner took himself. He was a passionate amateur photographer and based many of his works on images he had taken. This is not the first time I explore his photos. Especially those he did not use himself for paintings I am looking for. You will probably remember my Geesje Kwak series. A few years earlier, I did Nude after Breitner Photography – 22-04-17 (Sold). The last one was fun to create. However, I do not have the cubist feeling right now. It is because I am preoccupied with a very detailed oil painting at the moment. After two realistic pastels I made last week, I did not have much inspiration for innovation. Instead, just by practicing my fingers with a graphite pencil and then suddenly I had an idea. Hatching For no particular reason I thought of "Geesje Kwak – 25-08-21 (Sold)". I executed it in my hatching style using a mechanical pen. And if I did this with a Faber-Castell Pitt Matt 14B pencil this time. These hatchings are subtle and can therefore appear a bit weak tonally. I would not have this with this very dark graphite pencil. This endeavor became the heart of this sketch. No cubism this time but a kind of impressionism. The tone resembles "Duivelsberg – 25-12-23". Completely different subject however. By the way, this photo dates from 1890. This makes me realize how fast time passes. The elongated female form still seems so tangible. I had the same feeling with the kimono girl Geesje. A century between her pose and my gaze on her. Will people have the same look at my works in 100 years?
