Ruslan Kolomiyets

On February 19, 2014, Kyiv’s Independence Square became the site of tragedy and transformation. Ruslan Kolomiyets’ 19.02.2014 captures this pivotal moment from the Maidan Uprising, when protesters faced brutal violence yet stood firm against overwhelming force. The canvas shows the iconic Trade Union Building veiled in smoke, its massive presence both a backdrop and a witness. In the foreground, a crowd of figures confronts the haze, their silhouettes blending into one another, embodying both vulnerability and resilience.

Kolomiyets paints the scene with muted earth tones and the oppressive grey of smoke, contrasted only by faint glimmers of Ukraine’s blue and yellow. This balance of palette mirrors the balance of the day itself – tragedy shadowed by the first light of renewal. The raw brushwork intensifies the atmosphere of chaos while keeping the focus on collective humanity, rather than individual portraiture.

19.02.2014 is not simply a record of events. It is a reflection on the price of freedom, the fragility of peace, and the power of ordinary people standing together. For collectors, this work embodies both historical memory and universal meaning, linking Ukrainian experience to a broader human struggle for dignity.
