The Exile of Death, 2015

Maria Daniel Balcazar

A haunting black and white landscape captures a sprawling cemetery etched into a rugged hillside. The composition balances the heavy stillness of stone with the vastness of a desolate horizon. Each tomb stands as a silent witness to memory and endurance. The artist employs a documentary gaze to explore the intersection of faith and cultural survival.
High contrast tones emphasize the weathered textures of the masonry and the harshness of the terrain. A solitary cross pierces the sky, anchoring the scene in a spiritual context. The rhythmic repetition of the graves creates a visual map of collective history.
This archival pigment print transforms a site of mourning into a study of resilience. The absence of color strips away distraction, focusing the viewer on the raw geometry of the ruins. Light washes over the valley, casting soft shadows that suggest a timeless suspension. The image serves as a poignant reflection on the persistence of identity through the remnants of the past. The scene concludes with the sharp silhouette of a distant mountain range.
