Self-Reflection, 2022

Maria Daniel Balcazar

This monochromatic photograph explores the fragmented nature of identity. A woman holds a shard of mirror before her face. The reflection creates a sharp geometric division. One eye stares directly at the viewer while the other is seen in profile. This visual duality suggests a dialogue between the internal self and the external image.
The composition relies on a minimalist gray background to emphasize the subject. Soft lighting defines the contours of the face and the texture of the hair. The artist uses this precise framing to investigate memory and the reconstruction of the self.
The image transcends simple portraiture to become a study of resilience. It captures a moment of introspection and psychological depth. Every line is intentional. The archival pigment print ensures a lasting clarity of the tonal transitions. This artwork reflects a deep interest in how individuals preserve their heritage through personal reflection. The focus remains sharp on the hand and the mirrored glass, highlighting the fragile boundary between reality and perception.
