Description

Shine a Light This pastel drawing 'Model session – 03-26-24 – 1' was the first one I made during this month's session. We were back at 'De Blauwe Tram' in Leidschendam, the perfect place for these sessions. It is well equipped with many easels, privacy, no curious people around, and heating for the model. And last but not least, do not underestimate the lighting. You see, in a gathering of several people, it is almost impossible to set up lamps. They always blind someone in a circle of artists around the model. It is different from the freedom of an individual session with a model at home but more expensive though. So we settle for what we have. There was enough light but not too much coming from the ceiling. It shone straight down, creating beautiful rays of light and shadows. Personally, I like those the best! Blue on the Menu Maybe a small disappointment but I have exhausted the Ingres blue paper from Clairefontaine. In a previous artistic statement for the January 23 session, I mentioned it. At home, I delved into my paper reserve and found two other suitable blue sheets. A Canson Mi-teintes and a velours. The first execution is done on Canson using only Conté chalks (black and white). Lying down positions are often a challenge due to the complexity of the limbs and torsos placed diagonally. To get the right page filling, I decided to skip the lower left leg. Instead, I focused on the model Mike's torso and stretched the arm. First, measure it, get the correct proportions and fill the paper with white pastel. A few touches of Derwent XL extra dark charcoal. Then, a little erasing to make subtle structures visible in the musculature. That's it. Not bad for my first attempt tonight. Presentation

Corné Akkers was born in 1969 in Nijmegen, Netherlands. He grew up in a Bohemian environment, during the 70's. This ideal creative atmosphere inspired him and gave him the desire to paint. He trained in painting and drawing.

In his paintings, the artist explores the nude and portrait with several types of analysis and treatments, and doesn't lose sight on how light plays an important role. He combines the figurative style and the quest for abstraction, he plays around with colors and creates vast optical illusions. Not only is his work unique, his paintings shout out cubism but also surrealism and fauvism. They are so hypnotic that they are able to capture the look.

While working as a painter, Akkers also teach art at Voorburg in Netherlands. His paintings have been exhibited several times and sold to art collectors, all around the world.
