Description
A rigorous exploration of geometry is offered here through an ink drawing on paper. The line, of an almost technical precision, structures the white space with authority. The composition is organized around a play of vertical and horizontal lines.
The eye is led to the center of the page. Rectangles interlock with care. This succession of frames creates a striking effect of depth. An immaterial architecture is perceived opening towards an invisible point.
The economy of means emphasizes the mastery of the gesture. The contrast between the deep black of the ink and the clarity of the support reinforces the visual balance. The whole exudes a mathematical serenity. The rigor of the drawing evokes a research into perspective and symmetry.
This work from 192 testifies to an analytical approach to form. The bottom of the paper bears the artist's signature accompanied by the date.
Presentation
Jean-Claude Coutaz was born in 1944 in Saint-Maurice VS. He began his studies at the Collège de Saint-Maurice following the classical Latin-English track, continued them at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (EPFL) from which he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.
It was in 1972 that he settled in Sion with his wife and opened his own engineering office.
JCC began painting in 1980 and since then his technique has continued to evolve.
