Description
Abstraction is expressed here through a sharp chromatic dialogue. A diagonal of solar yellow cleaves the composition. It separates the space into two distinct zones. At the top, dark and earthy shades interweave. Touches of blue and brown suggest mineral depths. The bottom of the image plunges into a dense black.
The work on paper reveals a mastery of acrylic. The transitions are fluid. The grain of the support contributes to the visual texture. The balance rests on the opposition between clarity and darkness. This tension creates a sensation of suspended movement. The light seems to emerge from an opaque mass.
The approach is both rigorous and instinctive. It evokes geological layers or distant horizons. Each color zone possesses its own density. The final rendering is clean. The signature and the date appear discreetly in the bottom right.
Presentation
Jean-Claude Coutaz was born in 1944 in Saint-Maurice VS. He began his studies at the Collège de Saint-Maurice following the classical Latin-English track, continued them at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (EPFL) from which he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.
It was in 1972 that he settled in Sion with his wife and opened his own engineering office.
JCC began painting in 1980 and since then his technique has continued to evolve.
