Description
Abstraction is expressed here through a rigorous play of lines and masses. The composition is structured around a fragile balance between geometry and spontaneity.
The eye travels through contrasting areas. A dark and dense block asserts itself in the center. It opposes the lightness of the vertical hatching that structures the background.
The work of the materials brings a tactile depth. India ink defines sharp contours. Chalk softens the chromatic transitions.
Ochre and earthy tones anchor the composition in a certain sobriety. These warm colors dialogue with a luminous white and mineral grays.
The whole evokes an imaginary architecture. The line is precise, almost technical, recalling a study of space and perspective.
This drawing on paper, made in 197, explores the tension between the full and the empty.
Presentation
Jean-Claude Coutaz was born in 1944 in Saint-Maurice VS. He began his studies at the Collège de Saint-Maurice following the classical Latin-English track, continued them at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (EPFL) from which he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.
It was in 1972 that he settled in Sion with his wife and opened his own engineering office.
JCC began painting in 1980 and since then his technique has continued to evolve.
