Description
The image unfolds like a mineral exploration. The composition plays on contrasts of textures and transparencies. Chalk and India ink pigments intertwine on the paper.
The eye circulates between areas of clarity and organic masses. Ocher and earthy tones emerge in the lower part. They contrast with a pearl gray and white background.
The work relies on the unpredictability of the fluid. Spots and projections create an irregular visual rhythm. The whole evokes natural formations or ancient sediments.
The precision of the gesture meets here the chance of the material. This abstract approach favors the tactile sensation and chromatic depth.
The work dates from 193. It testifies to a technical research on the superposition of materials. The artist's signature appears in the bottom right.
Presentation
Jean-Claude Coutaz was born in 1944 in Saint-Maurice VS. He began his studies at the Collège de Saint-Maurice following the classical Latin-English track, continued them at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (EPFL) from which he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.
It was in 1972 that he settled in Sion with his wife and opened his own engineering office.
JCC began painting in 1980 and since then his technique has continued to evolve.
