Description
Abstraction is expressed here by a play of rigorous geometry. A blue rhombus dominates the composition. It seems to float on a dark, textured background. The white lines delineate precise spaces. They suggest an architectural fold.
The material overlaps with finesse. Acrylic is combined with India ink and chalk. This technical mix creates zones of transparency and opacity. The paper welcomes shades of deep blue and earthy tones.
Certain passages reveal a powdery grain. Spray effects bring an atmospheric dimension to the whole. The balance rests on the contrast between the sharpness of the angles and the blur of the backgrounds.
The execution testifies to a methodical approach. Structural precision dialogues with the fluidity of the pigments. This composition dated 191 explores the tension between order and matter. The whole closes on a subtle graphic detail in the bottom right.
Presentation
Jean-Claude Coutaz was born in 1944 in Saint-Maurice VS. He began his studies at the Collège de Saint-Maurice following the classical Latin-English track, continued them at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (EPFL) from which he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.
It was in 1972 that he settled in Sion with his wife and opened his own engineering office.
JCC began painting in 1980 and since then his technique has continued to evolve.
