Description
This abstract composition plays on a radical contrast between darkness and light. A azure blue dominates the surface. This color extends in irregular swaths. It seems to emerge from a deep black background.
The material is worked with precision. The artist uses acrylic and mixed media on paper. The visual rendering evokes eroded rock or a nocturnal landscape.
The textures vary. Dense areas and other more diffuse areas are observed. The black gnaws at the edges of the blue. This chromatic dialogue creates a constant visual tension.
The gesture is assured. The superposition of layers brings a tangible depth to the support. The eye moves between the areas of shadow and the flashes of color.
This piece dates from 2012. It testifies to a research on light and matter. The signature and the date appear discreetly in the bottom right of the composition.
Presentation
Jean-Claude Coutaz was born in 1944 in Saint-Maurice VS. He began his studies at the Collège de Saint-Maurice following the classical Latin-English track, continued them at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (EPFL) from which he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.
It was in 1972 that he settled in Sion with his wife and opened his own engineering office.
JCC began painting in 1980 and since then his technique has continued to evolve.
